TYPES OF RESPIRATORY PROTECTION

In Europe there are extensive regulations on occupational safety. These describe, among other things, the correct selection and use of protective clothing and personal protective equipment such as respiratory protection. At a basic level respiratory protective devices are divided into two categories.

Self-contained respirators are independent of the ambient atmosphere, air is supplied via oxygen cylinders. This type of respiratory protection is commonly used in extreme situations such as the fire service, and will not be discussed further here.

Filtering respiratory devices, on the other hand, are dependent on the ambient air. Harmful substances that have the potential to damage health and that could occur (e.g.) through the handling of chemicals are filtered out of this ambient air before it reaches the user. Requirements for the use of filtering respirators are that it is technically possible to filter the harmful substances, that the oxygen content of the air is at least 19.5% and that the harmful substances are known and have good warning properties (e.g. taste or smell).

Filtering respiratory masks are subdivided into different types. Particle filtering half masks, also called dust masks or FFP masks, offer reliable protection against particles such as dusts and aerosols. Other common types of respiratory mask are half and full face masks, which, when equipped with the appropriate filters, additionally protect against gases and vapours.

Depending on their design, these types of respiratory mask are relatively light, compact, easy to use and low-maintenance. This means that filtering respirators are the right choice for a large number of common applications in sectors such as industry, agriculture, construction, pharmaceuticals, health, chemicals and raw materials.
